‘Through the Olive Trees’ among Cannes bests

The US magazine, The New Yorker, has highlighted the bests of the Cannes Film Festival with Iranian film ‘Through the Olive Trees’ making it to the top list.  

Highlighted in the list are a total of 44 outstanding movies selected as the bests of the Cannes since its establishment in 1946; and late veteran filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami’s movie is also one them.

Considering the wonderful piece, the magazine writes “Abbas Kiarostami directed this warmly comedic and romantic meta-fiction, about the relationship that develops between a pair of nonprofessional actors while working on one of his films”.

The film narrates the story of Hossein who asks for Tahereh’s hand. But her family reject Hossein’s proposal because he does not have a house.

The same night, an earthquake happens and all the houses in the village are destroyed…

Kiarostami’s film was selected as the Iranian entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 67th edition of the Academy Awards.

It was also nominated for Palme d’Or at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival.

The latest edition of the Cannes Film Festival, which would have been taking place now, has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The list was prepared by Richard Brody who began writing for the American magazine in 1999.

Some other films included in Brody’s list are ‘Alexandra’ by Alexandra Sokurov, ‘All About Eve’ by Joseph Mankiewicz, ‘L’Argent’ by Robert Bresson and ‘The Connection’ by Shirley Clarke.
